Acivir Eye Ointment is typically used six times daily with 3-hour intervals between applications, for a duration of one week. Begin treatment at the first signs (e.g. tingling, burning, or blisters). Ensure that enough cream is used to fully cover the lesion(s). A half-inch ribbon of cream can cover approximately 4 square inches. To prevent spreading the virus to other areas of your body or to others, it's advisable to use an applicator (such as a cotton swab) for applying Acivir. You may also consider wearing a glove or finger cot during application. Always wash your hands thoroughly before and after using Acivir Eye Ointment. Avoid contact with the eyes.
Follow your doctor's instructions precisely when using Acivir Eye Ointment; do not discontinue use without your doctor’s approval, even if you start feeling better. Your symptoms may improve while the infection remains partly treated. Keep lesions caused by herpes viruses clean and dry.
Inform your doctor about your medical history and all medications you are currently taking. Acivir Eye Ointment is classified under FDA pregnancy category C, indicating that animal studies have shown harmful effects on the fetus (teratogenic or embryocidal effects) and that there are no controlled studies in women, nor sufficient studies available in women and animals. It is also unclear if Acivir Eye Ointment can transfer into breast milk. Therefore, do not use Acivir Eye Ointment without consulting your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
If you miss a dose, apply Acivir Eye Ointment as soon as you remember, then continue with your regular dosing schedule (for example, every 3 hours) until bedtime. However, if it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your normal schedule. Do not take a double dose to compensate for a missed one.
Potential side effects may include itching, stinging, burning, or a rash. These reactions usually subside on their own, but consult your doctor if they persist. Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect an allergic reaction (such as difficulty breathing, rash, itching, swelling of the lips, tongue, face, or hives).
If an overdose is suspected, seek medical help without delay.
